A man carrying a heavy rucksack reportedly intruded twice into the official residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales during the Christmas preparations. Identified as Derek Egan, 39, he was witnessed climbing over a fence into Kensington Palace two days before Christmas. The Metropolitan Police disclosed that Egan was apprehended by royal protection officers after gaining access to the property’s gardens on both occasions.
The repeated breaches, despite Egan being initially bailed by the police, raised significant concerns. Egan faced charges of trespassing on December 21 and 23 for his actions at Palace Green, Kensington. Following his arrest, Egan, residing in Hillingdon, was remanded in custody and appeared in court on December 24.
The incidents prompted experts to call for a thorough investigation into the security breach at Kensington Palace. Dai Davies, a former head of the Met Police’s Royal and Specialist Protection branch, emphasized the gravity of the situation and urged authorities to assess the potential threat to the Royal Family.
Although the Prince and Princess of Wales reside in Windsor, they were in London preparing for the traditional Sandringham Christmas at the time of the incidents. The intrusion by Egan added to a series of security breaches at royal properties. In a separate incident, Jaswant Singh Chail was sentenced to nine years in jail for attempting to breach Windsor Castle armed with a crossbow during Queen Elizabeth II’s residency on Christmas Day 2021.
Chail’s trial revealed his motivation stemmed from an AI “girlfriend” and Star Wars storylines. The court deemed him a threat and placed him in a psychiatric facility before transferring him to custody. The judge emphasized Chail’s intent to harm the sovereign, deeming the offense as severe as it could be. Chail, who expressed homicidal thoughts, had pursued roles that would bring him closer to the royal family.
