“Keir Starmer Regrets Backing Alaa Abd el-Fattah After Social Media Posts Resurface”

Share

Keir Starmer expressed remorse for his previous statement of being pleased about the return of democracy advocate Alaa Abd el-Fattah to the UK, following the resurfacing of concerning social media posts. The Prime Minister voiced disappointment over not being informed about the “repulsive” posts made by the British-Egyptian individual dating back to 2010, where he appeared to incite violence against Zionists and law enforcement.

El-Fattah, a prominent figure in the Arab Spring uprisings, entered the UK on Boxing Day after a travel restriction was lifted post his release from incarceration. Despite issuing an apology for his remarks, calls from Conservative and Reform figures to revoke his citizenship have emerged, although no such action is currently planned.

A review was initiated by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper last week to investigate the “serious information failures” that led to senior officials being unaware of the controversial posts. When pressed for an apology, Starmer acknowledged the oversight and highlighted the ongoing review process to rectify the situation.

El-Fattah was granted UK citizenship in December 2021 during Boris Johnson’s tenure as Prime Minister. His imprisonment for disseminating false information was condemned as a violation of international law by UN investigators, leading to his pardon by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi in September after extensive lobbying efforts by both Conservative and Labour governments.

Upon his arrival in the UK on December 26, El-Fattah reunited with his son residing in Brighton. In his apology, he acknowledged the offensiveness of his past comments, attributing them to youthful frustration amidst regional crises and police misconduct in Egypt.

While Downing Street denounced the historical posts as abhorrent, they noted El-Fattah’s comprehensive apology. The official spokesperson emphasized the UK’s commitment to religious and political freedom while maintaining condemnation for the nature of the controversial tweets.
