The Met Office has issued a new alert indicating that snow will accumulate in five specific areas. Following a snowy morning for many Brits, the snow is expected to clear quickly with sunshine anticipated shortly. However, some regions in the UK are likely to experience continued snowfall.
According to the latest forecast, snow showers are forecasted to persist throughout the weekend, carried inland by strong northerly winds. By Sunday, the winds are expected to ease, with showers mostly concentrated along the coasts. Snow showers are projected to diminish by Monday morning.
Temperatures inland are expected to stay below freezing over the weekend, preventing the thawing of accumulated snow. Additional snow accumulation of 2 to 5 cm, locally up to 10-15 cm, is possible in low-lying areas through the weekend and into Monday morning. Higher elevations above 200m, particularly in the northwest Highlands and Grampians, could see accumulations of 15-30 cm.
Due to Saturday’s strong winds, drifting snow and temporary blizzard conditions are likely, with the added risk of lightning near showers. Scotland could potentially experience up to 40cm of snow, with residents cautioned about enduring harsh winter conditions over the weekend. Travel disruptions, including delays and cancellations in rail, air, and road transport, as well as power outages, are expected.
A yellow warning has been issued for potential travel disruptions and traffic issues, although no significant risk to life or property is foreseen. An amber warning, considered more severe, advises individuals to consider altering plans to minimize risks.
The Met Office has updated a Yellow snow and ice alert, urging the public to prepare for extended travel times on roads, buses, and trains. The AA estimates that car journeys may reach 20.7 million across the UK on January 2, following a quieter New Year’s Day with an anticipated 18.0 million trips.
A spokesperson for the Met Office mentioned that the cold spell is expected to persist into the weekend and beyond, with further warnings possible due to below-average temperatures and ongoing snow showers.
