Kelsey Grammer’s daughter, Greer, recently shared details about a hurtful comment her father made to her after being estranged for 12 years. The actor, now 70, separated from Greer and her mother, Barrie Buckner, when Greer was just four years old. It wasn’t until Greer turned 19 that they reconnected, but one particular statement from Grammer deeply affected her emotionally.
Actress Greer, 33, who has established her own successful career, disclosed that her father expressed a desire for her not to carry his last name. This admission came shortly after they reconnected. In an interview on the Pretty Basic podcast, Greer recounted how Grammer had suggested to her mother that it might be better for Greer not to bear his surname for an easier upbringing.
At 19, upon hearing this revelation, Greer was overwhelmed with sadness as she interpreted it as a hurtful act of disassociation by her father. Grammer, who has a total of eight children, acknowledged in a People interview in May that he had neglected some of his older kids and was now striving to make amends.
Overcoming past struggles with addiction, including alcohol and cocaine abuse, Grammer attributed his issues to a traumatic event involving the brutal rape and murder of his younger sister, Karen, in 1975. Reflecting on how he coped with the pain through substance abuse, Grammer admitted to using drugs and alcohol to escape uncomfortable emotions, suggesting a self-destructive tendency within himself.
