Labour’s Wes Streeting has supported the party’s policy reversals while urging the government to strive for accuracy from the start. The Health Secretary proposed that achieving this should be a key goal for Labour in 2026 following recent flip-flops on various issues.
Amidst growing concerns over the impact of increased business rates on the pub industry, the Treasury is reportedly crafting a support package. This move follows a series of policy reversals, including changes related to winter fuel payments, disability benefits, and inheritance tax.
Addressing the issue of U-turns during a conference by the Institute for Government (IfG), Streeting emphasized the importance of feedback and rectifying mistakes promptly. He referenced a healthcare initiative called GIRFT, advocating for a similar approach in policymaking.
Streeting also criticized the “excuses culture” within Labour, cautioning against blaming external factors for government inefficiencies. His remarks were seen as a veiled criticism of Paul Ovenden, a former aide to Keir Starmer, who recently highlighted challenges faced by the party.
Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham called for significant reforms within Whitehall, accusing government departments of hindering devolution efforts. Burnham underscored the need for unified growth strategies and bemoaned internal conflicts within departments that impede progress.
He advocated for a shift in power dynamics, suggesting a reformation of the Westminster system to align with localized, growth-oriented approaches. Burnham emphasized the importance of removing bureaucratic barriers to enable more effective governance.
