In a thrilling 7-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer achieved a significant milestone by moving into 10th place in all-time strikeouts, surpassing Hall of Famer Walter Johnson. The 42-year-old Scherzer, in his ninth start of the season, now boasts 3,516 career strikeouts, edging one ahead of Johnson and trailing only Justin Verlander (3,554) among active pitchers.

During the game, Scherzer notched the historic strikeout by fanning Kyle Schwarber at the start of the sixth inning before conceding back-to-back home runs to Trea Turner and Bryce Harper, which leveled the score at 2-2 and ended his outing.

Prior to the long balls, Scherzer had dominated Philadelphia with five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and retiring nine consecutive batters. Despite the late-game setback, he finished the night yielding two runs on five hits, tallying four strikeouts, and lowering his ERA to 7.25.

Originally drafted in the first round (No. 11 overall) by Arizona in 2006, Scherzer boasts an impressive career record, including three Cy Young Awards, eight All-Star selections, and two World Series championships.

In other news, outfielder George Springer was unexpectedly removed from the Toronto Blue Jays’ starting lineup against the Phillies due to left shoulder tightness. Although slated to be the designated hitter batting fourth, Springer’s absence was precautionary, with Manager John Schneider indicating that the issue had been bothering him for a few days. However, Schneider expressed optimism that the injury would not be a long-term concern. Despite not starting, Springer later entered the game as a pinch runner in the eighth inning.
