A tip from a British Gas energy specialist suggests using residual oven heat to warm your kitchen without relying on central heating.
Jessica Rawstron, a smart energy engineer, recommends leaving your oven door open after cooking to allow the remaining heat to slowly spread into the room instead of shutting it immediately.
She explained, “After your meal is ready, instead of closing the oven door, consider leaving it open to let the heat circulate and help keep your house warm while you dine. Just remember to keep children and pets away from the oven.”
In addition to this advice, British Gas recommends preparing your home for winter by sealing gaps around windows and doors to prevent draughts.

To ensure efficient heating, regularly bleed your radiators and schedule your annual boiler service. This advice is particularly relevant as parts of the UK are under yellow warnings for snow and ice due to the recent temperature drop.
Households are expected to face higher energy bills, with the average direct debit payment now at £1,758 per year for gas and electricity. The price cap regulates unit rates and standing charges but does not limit the total energy bill, which depends on usage for those not on fixed energy tariffs.
For pre-payment meter users, the price cap has increased to £1,711 annually, and bill recipients can expect to pay £1,894 per year. The price cap is reviewed quarterly, with the next adjustment scheduled for April 2026.
