“Met Office Warns of Potential Power Cuts and Hazards from Storm Chandra”

Share

The Met Office is advising the public to make necessary preparations ahead of potential power cuts. Being equipped with essential items such as torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other necessities can help individuals deal more effectively with power disruptions.

Weather warnings in Wales are gradually lifting this morning, with only one area still under a wind warning until late afternoon. The Met Office experts caution about potential risks of injuries or life-threatening situations due to flying debris, large waves, and beach materials hitting sea fronts, coastal roads, and properties.

In Northern Ireland, the entire region is under warnings for heavy rain and strong winds. Some coastal areas are facing an upgraded amber warning for wind from Ballycastle to Kilkeel.

Paul Gundersen, the Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, highlighted the hazards expected from Storm Chandra affecting the UK. Areas like Isles of Scilly, western Cornwall, and southwest Wales, already vulnerable after Storm Goretti, may experience gusts of 70 to 80mph. Heavy rain on saturated ground in Dorset, Devon, Somerset, and Cornwall could lead to flooding. As colder air interacts with Chandra further north, snow accumulation of 10-20cm is possible in higher regions of the Pennines, southern Scotland, and the Highlands. Keeping updated on forecasts and local warnings is crucial during this complex weather event.

The potential impacts include flooding in homes and businesses, potential damage to buildings, transportation delays or cancellations, difficult driving conditions due to spray and flooding, and power cuts affecting homes and businesses. Additionally, landslides are a possibility in susceptible areas.

Across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for the ongoing weather conditions.
