Milano Cortina Winter Olympics Village Faces Condom Shortage

Share

The Winter Olympics village at Milano Cortina is facing a shortage of condoms, despite initially distributing 10,000 free condoms to athletes. The living quarters for Olympians have a reputation for being lively, with numerous stories of amorous activities over the years.

To address potential issues, organizers have provided free contraceptives. However, in contrast to the distribution of 200,000 condoms at the Paris Summer Games in 2024, only 10,000 were given out at the current event in northern Italy. While Paris hosted around 10,500 athletes, the number in Milan is just under 3,000, making the condom supply insufficient.

An athlete, requesting anonymity, revealed to Italian newspaper La Stampa that the condoms ran out in three days, with uncertainty about when more would be available. Additionally, to curb off-camera activities, organizers introduced ‘anti-sex’ beds, but the measures seem ineffective.

The shortage of condoms is not a new occurrence. During the Sydney 2000 Olympics, an extra 20,000 condoms had to be ordered after the initial 70,000 were used up. Preventing the spread of sexually transmitted infections is crucial for the Games, with athletes reminded of the importance of health and common sense upon arrival in Milan.

Former Olympic gold medalists have shed light on the vibrant atmosphere within the village, emphasizing that sexual activities are part of the Olympic spirit. The distribution of condoms is seen as a practical measure to address athletes’ needs.
