NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, a native of Hamilton who previously played for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League. Mayich, aged 21, was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. His player profile indicates that he participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s.
According to reports from the OHL, Mayich was admitted to the hospital on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona. The St. Louis Blues have expressed their concerns for Mayich’s recovery and well-being during this challenging time.
When contacted by CBC Hamilton, Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, revealed that a student from their hockey team had collapsed during an outdoor morning training session and is currently hospitalized. The university refrained from disclosing the student’s identity and stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, released a statement expressing the organization’s support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery as he receives medical treatment in Arizona. He extended the team’s deepest sympathies to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates.
OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, conveying thoughts and support to Matthew, his parents, John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously celebrated Mayich’s achievements when he signed with the ’67s in 2021 and when he was drafted by the Blues in 2023, highlighting his longstanding involvement with the organization since childhood.
