Winnipeg Jets’ star goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck, a decorated player with an Olympic gold medal and three Vezina trophies, has made a public trade request. Speculation about his future has been ongoing for months, and Hellebuyck confirmed that he privately asked for a trade from the Jets several months ago through a statement from his agent on Thursday.

Hellebuyck stated that he had handled the situation discreetly to give the organization time to consider its options but felt it was necessary to publicly confirm his request with training camp approaching. He expressed that moving on was the best decision for himself and his family and thanked the Winnipeg Jets fans for their support throughout his career.

The 33-year-old goaltender, hailing from Michigan, achieved a remarkable feat in the 2024-25 NHL season by being named both the league’s MVP and top goalie when the Jets secured the league’s best record for the first time in franchise history.

Jets’ General Manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff, acknowledged Hellebuyck’s desire for a change and praised his contributions to the team over the years. Cheveldayoff expressed respect for Hellebuyck’s achievements and stated that the team would handle the situation thoughtfully.

Hellebuyck reminisced about being drafted by the Jets in 2012 and emphasized his dedication to proving the team right in their decision. He was also honored by U.S. President Donald Trump with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his performance in the Olympic gold-medal game earlier this year.

Having been a Vezina Trophy finalist five times, Hellebuyck’s trade request marks a significant development in his career.
