“Ontario Opens Door for More Casinos in Niagara”

Share

The Ontario government has recently announced a new agreement that could pave the way for additional casinos in the Niagara Region, signaling the end of existing exclusivity rights. Premier Doug Ford unveiled the Destination Niagara initiative last December, aiming to attract double the number of visitors to the area by introducing multiple new casinos, a theme park, an expanded airport, and other amenities.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.’s interim minister of tourism, culture, and gaming revealed that a deal has been struck with MGE Niagara Entertainment Inc. to permit more casino operators in the region. Under the agreement, MGE will relinquish its exclusivity rights while retaining control of Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara.

Moving forward, the OLG is planning to kick off a procurement process later this year to identify potential new casino operators. However, there has been local opposition to certain aspects of Ford’s Destination Niagara plan, such as the proposal to install a second ferris wheel near Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, for instance, expressed skepticism about the ferris wheel idea, stating that it lacks community support.
