“Petition for Four-Day School Week Sparks Parliamentary Debate”

Share

A considerable number of voters are advocating for schools to transition to four-day weeks with extended daily hours. Over 126,000 signatures were gathered on a petition prompting Members of Parliament to discuss this proposed change. Despite the significant support, the Department for Education (DfE) has expressed reluctance to implement the suggested shift.

Proponents argue that adopting a four-day school week would enhance teacher recruitment and retention. Conversely, the government contends that such a modification would place burdens on parents, necessitating them to arrange alternative childcare solutions.

The issue is set to be deliberated in Westminster Hall due to the high level of public backing. The petition, initiated by Steve Smith, emphasizes the call for all schools to condense their week to four days while elongating each school day by an hour.

The 4 Day Week Campaign’s director, Joe Ryle, advocates for this adjustment, emphasizing the potential to address the ongoing teacher recruitment crisis and improve work-life balance. However, the government has dismissed the proposal, citing the requirement for schools to provide a minimum of 32 hours and 30 minutes of education per week.

The DfE’s response highlights the challenges of reducing the school week to four days while meeting the mandated minimum hours. It warns of the adverse impact on parents, who may face increased childcare needs, reduced employment hours, or even departure from the workforce, leading to financial strains and economic repercussions.
