Glenn Deir, a retired journalist residing in St. John’s, shares his experience of relying on meal replacement drinks after throat surgery due to cancer. Deir abstained from alcohol and turned to Boost, a nutrition drink, as his sole sustenance post-surgery. Despite missing solid foods, Deir’s spirits remained high as he navigated the challenges of his restricted diet.
Following his surgery in July, Deir faced difficulties with swallow tests, leading to an extended period of consuming Boost and pureed food. Despite his efforts, he continued to struggle with swallowing, prompting ongoing medical evaluations and treatments. Notably, Deir had to cancel a planned moose hunting trip due to his health condition, a setback he humorously imagined explaining to his oncologist.
Enduring radiation treatment and chemotherapy, Deir remained determined to regain his ability to eat solid food. His perseverance paid off as he progressed through intensive swallow therapy, gradually reintroducing solid foods into his diet. Although he still faces challenges with swallowing and reduced saliva production, Deir celebrates each milestone in his culinary journey, from pudding cups to soft meals like mac and cheese and apple pie.
Deir’s story serves as a testament to resilience and the importance of support during challenging times. Despite the setbacks and slow progress, he remains optimistic and appreciative of the small victories along his path to recovery.
