U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media on Wednesday, declaring a forthcoming economic operation against Iran that he described as “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” Trump emphasized that this operation would entail Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale, though he provided limited details.
Furthermore, Trump cautioned of economic repercussions for any nation that extended support to Tehran or offered any form of assistance to Iran. He explicitly stated that any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to aid Iran would face significant Economic Consequences. Without naming specific countries, Trump emphasized the need to halt activities such as oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies immediately.
Amidst a six-month-old war that involved multiple Gulf nations and disrupted global markets, Iran demonstrated its influence over shipping routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway for a substantial portion of the world’s traded oil before February.
Despite ceasefire agreements announced by the U.S. and Iran in April and June to restore shipping flows through Hormuz, the efforts quickly faltered, with Israel largely withdrawing from the conflict it had engaged in alongside the U.S. in February.
Trump’s social media statements and warnings may not always materialize as initially stated. The United Arab Emirates recently suspended trade activities, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran following reports of missile launches from Iran, which Iran dismissed as unfounded.
While Iran expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with the U.S., it maintained that negotiations should not be perceived as surrender, as stated by an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader.
