UK Faces Arctic Blast: Heavy Snowfall Expected

Share

Recent weather maps indicate that the UK is bracing for heavy snowfall, with approximately 30cm expected in a blizzard later this month due to an Arctic blast bringing temperatures as low as -4C.

Although Brits are experiencing a slightly milder week following a cold start to 2026, forecasts suggest that individuals should prepare for more wintry weather throughout January by keeping hats and gloves handy.

The weather patterns show that low-pressure systems moving in from the north and west will bring unsettled conditions and snow, as moist air collides with cold air moving southward from the Arctic.

Several low-pressure systems are set to arrive from the Atlantic, with one in particular originating from the northwest expected to usher in colder temperatures and heavy snow on January 26.

According to a map by WXCharts, large areas of northern England, Scotland, and Wales are anticipated to experience significant snowfall, with up to 30cm of snow in some regions.

In Scotland, cities like Glasgow are likely to see heavy snow, along with Manchester, Sheffield, and Leeds in northern England, while Cardiff and Swansea are also expected to witness substantial flurries.

Temperatures are set to plummet, especially in central and western Scotland where it could reach as low as -4C, while even the mildest regions in southern England are expected to experience single-digit temperatures.

The Met Office forecast warns of potential “winter hazards” from January 17-26, with low-pressure systems moving in from the Atlantic, likely resulting in changeable weather across the UK.

Despite some drier and settled periods towards the east, wet and windy conditions are expected, with periods of heavy rain and possible windy weather across various parts of the UK.

Before the arrival of colder weather later in the month, the UK is facing a wet and windy week, with Met Office yellow warnings for ice in place for most of Scotland, and rain alerts for southern England and Wales, highlighting the varied weather conditions across the country.
