In the UK, a significant change is on the horizon for millions of phone users, emphasizing the importance of homeowners taking action before an imminent deadline. The traditional copper landlines, which have served as the backbone of communication for decades, are set to be phased out and replaced by advanced technology known as Digital Voice. This innovative upgrade utilizes broadband connections to facilitate calls to loved ones.
The transition to Digital Voice is not only necessary to align with contemporary demands but also promises enhanced reliability and introduces new functionalities like improved call clarity, call forwarding to smartphones, and enhanced call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.
Scheduled to take effect from January 2027, the impending overhaul has prompted BT to launch a proactive campaign to raise awareness among the public. Spearheaded by Clare Balding, the ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch’ initiative urges households to inspect their landline setups and ensure they are prepared for the digital era.
This awareness drive coincides with recent studies revealing that many Britons tend to procrastinate essential tasks, assuming that operational systems do not warrant immediate attention if they are still functional.
Clare Balding stressed the critical nature of responding promptly to communication from service providers to ensure uninterrupted landline services, emphasizing BT’s commitment to guiding customers through the transition process seamlessly.
Assurances have been given that customers are likely to retain their existing phone numbers, and costs are expected to remain stable, with no anticipated increases in bills during the migration. In most cases, no technician visits will be necessary as households can simply connect their current phones to their broadband hubs instead of the traditional copper wall sockets.
While exceptions may arise, prompting the need to contact service providers for assistance, Lucy Baker, BT’s Consumer Digital Voice Director, emphasized the importance of heeding notifications from providers to prevent disruptions in essential connections.
BT has highlighted the importance for customers with special requirements, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their providers promptly to ensure appropriate support is in place.
Digital Voice, BT’s latest home phone service, operates on broadband technology, replacing copper connections. It offers modern features like Multi Call for conference calls, three-way calling, and call diversion to alternate numbers, including mobile phones. The upgraded service promises improved call quality, eliminating issues like crackling conversations, provided users have compatible Digital Home phones.
For most households, transitioning to Digital Voice will not impact their phone usage habits, as the cost of the new service is bundled into a single package with broadband services, without any additional charges for Digital Voice functionalities.
