As chilly temperatures grip the UK, numerous schoolchildren are relishing an unexpected break as multiple schools nationwide remain closed due to the wintry conditions.
The Met Office has issued fresh cold weather alerts as temperatures plummeted below minus 10 degrees Celsius in Cumbria overnight. In Banffshire, Scotland, Met Office instruments recorded 20 inches of snow. Yellow warnings are currently in effect for Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England.
Additional warnings have been issued for eastern England, western Wales, Devon, and Cornwall.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, stated, “The UK will face various winter weather challenges this week, including low temperatures, snow showers, and the risk of ice. Several severe weather warnings have been issued and are expected to be updated, so staying informed with the forecast is crucial.”
On Monday, hundreds of schools remained shut, affecting Wales, South West England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Schools have begun announcing closures for Tuesday as well, with numerous shutdowns in Northern Ireland.
The UK government has provided guidance for parents seeking information on school closures. To check if a school will be open, parents can visit the gov.uk School closures website and enter their postcode to access relevant information provided by their local council.
The cold spell is predicted to persist, with frontal systems moving in from the west from Wednesday to Friday, bringing a mix of rain, sleet, and snow across the country, accompanied by strong winds at times.
Tomorrow’s forecast (Tuesday, January 6) anticipates another cold day with rain, sleet, and snow in the north, while the south is expected to be drier with sunny intervals before precipitation moves in later in the evening.
