Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, is scheduled to hold discussions with Danish representatives regarding President Donald Trump’s proposal to acquire Greenland. Rubio mentioned to journalists that the meeting is set for next week. This development follows the confirmation from the White House about Trump’s interest in “taking over” Greenland before the end of his term.
The preference is for the US to purchase Greenland from Denmark. However, if Denmark declines, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump is prepared to consider using the US military to secure the territory. Leavitt emphasized that Trump views acquiring Greenland as a crucial national security objective to counter potential threats in the Arctic region.
Trump faced criticism from European leaders over his pursuit of Greenland, with Denmark cautioning that such a move could jeopardize the NATO alliance. In response, Trump took to Truth Social to express his concerns, suggesting that NATO might not provide the expected support. He also highlighted his dissatisfaction with Norway for not awarding him the Nobel Prize and warned about the implications for NATO without US involvement.
Despite the tensions, Trump affirmed his commitment to NATO, stating that the US will continue to support the alliance even if reciprocity is lacking.
