After experiencing disruptions for several days, Wabush Airport is set to restart flights on Wednesday, as confirmed by PAL Airlines. The flight cancellations earlier this week were a result of the airport’s inability to meet federal firefighting and rescue requirements for commercial flights with over 19 passengers due to a mechanical issue with a vehicle.
PAL Airlines announced on social media that the necessary firefighting equipment for passenger flights has been reinstated, allowing flights 921, 922, 833, and 834 to and from the Labrador west airport to resume on Wednesday. Affected passengers will receive updated travel information from the airline’s reservations team regarding their flight arrangements.
Before the flight resumptions, Labrador’s Member of Parliament expressed frustration over the repeated disruptions at the airport but remained optimistic about a prompt resolution to the latest issue. The airport faced challenges when both of its mandated fire trucks were out of service due to maintenance and a part failure, leading to the temporary halt in operations.
Efforts were made to restore the airport’s firefighting capability by flying in necessary parts from Edmonton overnight. The MP emphasized the need for a review of the incident to prevent such prolonged disruptions in the future. PAL Airlines facilitated a charter flight to deliver the required parts to Wabush, aiming to resume commercial service once the airport is ready.
Chris Bussey, co-founder of Advocates for Safer Airports in Canada, highlighted concerns over the emergency response capability at Wabush Airport, stressing the importance of proper firefighting equipment for air traffic disaster scenarios. He advocated for increased resources, such as maintenance plans and on-site mechanics, to enhance emergency preparedness at Canadian airports.
