“Knife Crime Plummets: Progress and Prevention Prevail”

Share

Since assuming the role of Policing Minister, my commitment has been to combat knife crime and enhance community safety. A year later, that commitment has materialized into tangible results.

Significant progress has been made in reducing knife-related incidents, saving lives, and fortifying neighborhoods through resolute actions undertaken by the Home Office and law enforcement agencies.

The focus of the past year has been on action and outcomes rather than mere rhetoric. Strategic enforcement efforts and preventative measures in areas highly afflicted by knife robberies have led to a notable transformation.

Task forces dedicated to addressing knife robberies in seven high-incidence regions have successfully reduced such crimes by 15% since June 2024. This translates to nearly 2,500 fewer robberies, marking a substantial improvement from the escalating trend prior to the establishment of these specialized units. Targeted policing strategies, informed by data analysis, have effectively shielded communities and preempted acts of violence.

Our County Lines Programme has achieved remarkable accomplishments as well. These illicit drug networks, which contribute to the proliferation of knife crime and lure vulnerable youth into criminal activities, have been dismantled in significant numbers.

Since July 2024, over 3,000 lines of operation have been terminated, leading to more than 8,200 arrests, including charging 1,600 line holders, and the seizure of around 1,000 knives. Beyond the statistics lie transformed lives: over 4,300 at-risk individuals have been referred for safeguarding, and over 600 children have received support through the Catch22 service we financially support.

These young individuals are breaking free from exploitation and forging safer futures. The results are evident. Hospital admissions due to stabbings in regions serving as hubs for Class A drug distribution have declined by 25%, equating to 840 individuals spared from harm.

Instances of drug misuse-related hospitalizations have also witnessed a sharp decrease. These figures represent more than just numbers; they signify families shielded from anguish and communities infused with optimism. This progress is the result of meticulous planning and evidence-based decision-making.

By implementing initiatives like knife surrender programs, we have facilitated a means for individuals seeking to disengage from the culture of carrying knives to relinquish their weapons. Nearly 60,000 knives have been removed from circulation through these initiatives. Our innovative Hex mapping technology enables pinpointing of hyperlocal knife crime hotspots, aiding in smarter policing and targeted interventions in collaboration with local stakeholders.

Violence Reduction Units are actively engaging with families and educational institutions to divert young individuals from criminal paths, while over 50 Young Futures Panel initiatives are intervening at earlier stages to shield those most vulnerable.

Moreover, we have heeded the voices of those most impacted by these abhorrent crimes. Spearheaded by Pooja Kanda, Ronan’s Law, named after her son who tragically fell victim to a stabbing incident in 2022, has bolstered penalties for offenders and enhanced safeguards for victims, sending a resolute message that knife crime will not be tolerated.

Stricter age verification protocols for online knife sales are closing avenues exploited by criminals, and consultations are underway for the implementation of a licensing scheme to impede illicit knife purchases by criminals and young individuals.

The battle against knife crime is ongoing, but the accomplishments of the past year exemplify the potential unleashed when government bodies, law enforcement agencies, and communities collaborate. Each surrendered knife, each dismantled County Line, and each safeguarded child represent lives safeguarded and futures secured.

We have transitioned from a trajectory of escalating knife crime to one of diminishing incidents—and our resolve remains unwavering until serious violence is eradicated from our communities, offering every young person the prospect of a safer tomorrow.
