A young woman, who had informed her family about attending a New Year’s Eve celebration, tragically fell victim to a horrific crime perpetrated by individuals she considered friends. The perpetrators, initially facing capital punishment for the brutal murder of a learning-disabled woman, ultimately received life sentences after reaching a plea agreement that involved confessing to their heinous acts.
The harrowing sequence of events unfolded in early January 2014 when a jogger discovered a pink Ugg boot and a small pink handbag in a secluded area of Pennsylvania while out for a New Year run. Inside the handbag, the jogger found an ID card belonging to Ashley Kline, a 23-year-old woman with a history of lead poisoning-induced brain damage, who had been reported missing on December 30. Described by her family as “happy and loving but naive and overly trusting,” Ashley had the mental capacity of a 15-year-old.
Ashley had willingly accompanied Ryan Matthew Schannauer, a family friend, believing they were going to watch a movie. However, Schannauer and his partner, Adam Morning Star Lynch, subjected Ashley to a brutal attack involving beating, stabbing, and burning her to death after luring her into a car under false pretenses.
Despite admitting guilt, neither man provided a clear motive for their senseless actions in court. Assistant District Attorney Christopher Lechner highlighted how Ashley’s misplaced trust in Schannauer led to her tragic demise, emphasizing the weight of the consequences on the perpetrators.
Ashley’s father had believed she was assisting a friend in preparing for a New Year’s Eve gathering, unaware that she had agreed to meet Schannauer. Schannauer, who harbored romantic feelings for Ashley, deceived her into getting into his car under the guise of friendship, only to take her to a desolate area where she was mercilessly attacked and set on fire by Schannauer and Lynch.
The subsequent investigation revealed conflicting accounts from the defendants, with each blaming the other for the murder. Crucial evidence found in Lynch’s car, such as Ashley’s belongings and physical traces, linked the perpetrators to the crime scene.
