New Year’s Day of 2026 began tragically in the Netherlands, where individuals lost their lives in firework-related incidents amid clashes in major cities, culminating in the destruction of a historic church. Two fatalities, a 17-year-old from Nijmegen and a 38-year-old man from Aalsmeer, resulted from separate firework accidents that also left three others severely injured. Law enforcement officials denounced the “unprecedented” violence directed towards police and emergency services leading up to the New Year.
Dramatic images captured the chaos of fireworks and explosions in The Hague and Amsterdam, extending to the Vondelkerk church in Amsterdam. This more than 150-year-old church, overlooking the city’s largest park, now stands as a symbol of the New Year’s unrest. Dutch Police Union leader Nine Koiiman reported being among officers targeted with fireworks while on duty in Amsterdam.
Multiple groups of residents in The Hague’s Transvaal district engaged in exchanges of fireworks, escalating tensions. Chief Commissioner Wilbert Paulissen of the East Brabant Regional Police Unit noted that nearly all riot officers were deployed, describing a significant and prolonged police presence throughout the night. Incidents included petrol bombs thrown at officers in Breda and eye injuries sustained by 14 individuals in Rotterdam, including 10 children.
The surge in violence strained the country’s healthcare system, prompting a post-midnight alert advising residents to avoid contacting emergency services unless facing life-threatening situations. These events occurred just before the enactment of a ban on unofficial fireworks. Meanwhile, a separate tragedy unfolded in Switzerland, where a fire at a ski resort bar in Crans-Montana during a New Year’s celebration resulted in approximately 40 deaths and 115 injuries, with many in critical condition.
As authorities initiated investigations into the Swiss incident, Swiss President Guy Parmelin referred to the fire as one of the nation’s worst tragedies. King Charles III and Queen Camilla expressed their condolences, lamenting the loss of life and the shift from a night of celebration to tragedy.
