Expect more snowfall in various UK regions today with temperatures struggling to rise above freezing.
The Met Office has issued seven weather warnings, including an amber alert for up to 20 inches of snow in parts of Scotland, due to a cold snap gripping the country.
Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth from the Met Office explained, “Arctic maritime air moving in from the north will bring bitterly cold conditions and frequent snow showers to northern areas. Eastern regions could also see snow, with up to 50 cm expected over high ground by the weekend, accompanied by strong winds leading to blizzards and snow drifts.”
On Friday, Drumnadrochit in the Scottish Highlands recorded the lowest temperature at -5.7C, with similar frigid conditions anticipated today across the UK.
Weather warnings are in place for snow, ice, and strong winds, especially along the North Sea coast in Tyne and Wear and County Durham, leading to potential travel disruptions, particularly in Northeast England.
Temperatures are set to drop further on Saturday night, with the possibility of ice formation due to snow showers, resulting in widespread cold conditions, including temperatures as low as -8C in areas with existing snow cover, predominantly in the northern regions.
Regions like Orkney & Shetland, Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, Strathclyde, East Midlands, East of England, North East England, Yorkshire & Humber, Wales, South West England, and Northern Ireland are all expected to experience severe weather conditions.
