Trump Pushes for Greenland Control, Defies Allies

Share

President Donald Trump has reiterated his stance that the United States must secure control over Greenland to prevent potential invasions by Russia or China. Speaking at a gathering with oil companies interested in the exploitation of Venezuelan resources, Trump emphasized his determination to acquire Greenland through negotiations or force, without disclosing specific financial offers to Greenlanders, who are part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Trump asserted, “We are taking action on Greenland, regardless of their consent, to avert the risk of Russian or Chinese dominance in the region.” He expressed a preference for a peaceful resolution but asserted readiness for more forceful measures if necessary.

Defence Secretary John Healey of the United Kingdom confirmed that British military facilities would not support any potential US military actions against Greenland. He emphasized the importance of adhering to legal frameworks and existing alliances, such as NATO, to guide decisions on military engagements.

Concerns have risen over Trump’s intentions to deploy US forces to assert control over Greenland, a move perceived as crucial for American national security. Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, cautioned that any US military intervention in Greenland could jeopardize the NATO alliance, of which Denmark is a member.

European leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, have stressed the necessity of respecting the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark regarding the territory’s future. Diplomatic efforts have escalated, with discussions held between key figures to address concerns over potential Russian activities in the Arctic region.
