A Vancouver band teacher, Robert Kyle Ledingham, has been permanently barred from teaching after admitting to sexually assaulting a student. Ledingham, who was a certified teacher since May 2008, pleaded guilty to a sexual assault charge in May 2024. Initially facing multiple charges including sexual exploitation, the incident involved a student volunteering at a Vancouver School District high school where Ledingham taught band.
Due to a court-ordered publication ban, the student’s identity remains confidential. The agreement detailed that Ledingham’s misconduct took place between April and June 2019 at a different high school from where he taught. Following his guilty plea to one count of sexual assault, the other charges were dropped. Ledingham received a 15-month conditional sentence, with a stipulation preventing him from seeking employment overseeing individuals under 18.
The Vancouver School District terminated Ledingham’s employment in November 2024. Acknowledging his actions as professional misconduct, the former band teacher consented to a lifetime ban on applying for a teaching certificate.
