An inquiry concluded that a young student tragically passed away just hours after sharing a disturbing image related to the popular series Squid Game. Sebastian Cizmanon, aged 12, was discovered unconscious at his residence in Castleford on June 27 and was later pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. The cause of death was determined to be hanging.
According to testimonies presented during the Wakefield inquest, Sebastian had been playing joyfully in the backyard before expressing fatigue and heading indoors, where he was later found unresponsive by a family member while bringing him ice cream. Despite immediate medical attention, Sebastian could not be revived.
The inquiry revealed that Sebastian was fond of the dystopian thriller Squid Game produced by Netflix. Authorities discovered an image on his phone depicting a character from the series who was depicted as hanging. Sebastian was described as a jovial “prankster” who delighted in entertaining and connecting with friends through humor.
Law enforcement officials, after conversing with his family, suspected that Sebastian may have been attempting to imitate scenes from Squid Game. On the day of the incident, Sebastian had shared an image of the hanging character from the series on a WhatsApp group. An investigation found no indication that Sebastian had engaged in any hazardous challenges on platforms like TikTok, but he had watched the show and searched for first-aid information on managing choking incidents on YouTube.
Although concerns were initially raised about dangerous challenges, the police found no evidence to support such speculations. Sebastian’s family had previously cautioned him about the risks associated with online trends, and Sebastian had assured them he would not partake in them.
Detective Sergeant Paul Bayliss, who examined the circumstances surrounding Sebastian’s passing, suggested that his interest in Squid Game, coupled with his playful demeanor and the image found on his phone, could offer an explanation for the tragic event.
Dr. Philip Dore, the headteacher at St. Wilfred’s Catholic High School, praised Sebastian as a popular and humorous student who excelled at bringing laughter to his peers. Sebastian’s parents, Marcin and Katarzyna, emphasized that Sebastian had no underlying mental health issues and believed his death to be a heart-wrenching accident.
Assistant Coroner John Hobson labeled Sebastian’s demise as a “very tragic set of circumstances,” noting that Sebastian had shared an image related to the game he was engaged in on the day he passed away. Mr. Hobson concluded that Sebastian’s death was the result of a misadventure, defined as an unintentional mishap stemming from a deliberate action that led to fatality.
