“Experts Warn: Check Kids’ Backpack Weight for Health”

Share

Parents are being urged to inspect their children’s backpacks before they head off to school, not focusing on what’s inside, but rather on the weight of the bags. Dean Blackstock, a member of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), has raised concerns with Marks and Spencer that many children are carrying excessive loads in their bags, potentially leading to health issues.

Carrying a heavy backpack can result in back pain for children. Health experts recommend that a child’s backpack should not exceed 10% of their body weight to safeguard their spinal health.

Mr. Blackstock emphasized the importance of adhering to the recommended weight limit for school bags to protect children’s spinal health, growth, and development. Overloading backpacks can strain growing spines, muscles, and joints, leading to issues like poor posture, discomfort, and long-term musculoskeletal problems.

Children often adjust their posture to compensate for heavy bags, which can lead to imbalances, fatigue, and injuries over time. It is crucial to calculate the appropriate maximum weight for your child by multiplying their weight by 0.1 and regularly monitor the weight of the backpack by adding essentials like water and a lunchbox.

Proper packing techniques, such as distributing weight evenly and placing heavier items at the top, can help prevent strain on the shoulders. Mr. Blackstock highlighted the significance of wearing the backpack on both shoulders and adjusting the straps correctly to ensure proper weight distribution and reduce pressure on the body.

Making small adjustments in how children carry their school bags can significantly impact their long-term musculoskeletal health.
