Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw revealed on Thursday that she declined an offer to direct an upcoming TV series based on the popular “Harry Potter” franchise, citing her stance against supporting transphobia. Pankiw shared a screenshot of a text conversation on her Instagram account, where she emphatically rejected the opportunity.
Expressing her firm stance against funding transphobic content, Pankiw stated, “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia!” She clarified that the offer was for a directing role, not acting.
Known for directing episodes of “Black Mirror,” the first season of “Feel Good,” and the film “I Used to be Funny,” Pankiw’s decision to turn down the project was highlighted in her social media post dated April 21. The post did not disclose the identity of the person she was communicating with.
The new TV series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, and will be available for streaming on Crave in Canada. The show is adapted from J.K. Rowling’s beloved fantasy book series, with the inaugural season drawing its name from the first book.
Rowling, the British author behind the “Harry Potter” universe, has faced backlash for her controversial views on transgender issues. Notably, she has supported individuals who assert that biological sex cannot be changed. Despite criticism, Rowling remains steadfast in her beliefs, stating that “Trans women aren’t women.”
The decision to decline involvement in the “Harry Potter” series has also been echoed by fellow director and writer Kate Herron. Herron, known for her work on “Loki,” expressed solidarity with Pankiw, emphasizing her unwavering refusal to participate in the project.
While Rowling’s opinions have stirred debate within the “Harry Potter” community, responses from the show’s production team and Pankiw’s representatives regarding the refusals have not been provided at this time.
