Miyu Yamashita, a 25-year-old golfer from Japan, secured her first victory in Canada at the CPKC Women’s Open held in Edmonton. Yamashita, who now has four LPGA Tour wins with two victories this year, displayed an impressive performance at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club. She finished the tournament at 23 under with a final round score of 4-under-par 66, claiming a nine-stroke victory over her compatriot Yuri Yoshida, who finished at 14 under.

Expressing her joy, Yamashita mentioned her happiness in winning in Canada and appreciated the local support she received throughout the tournament. Her exceptional performance in Edmonton tied the record for the lowest four-day score on the LPGA Tour at 257 strokes.

Anna Huang from Vancouver emerged as the top Canadian, finishing tied for fourth at 12 under after a strong final round. Calgary’s Aphrodite Deng, who finished in seventh place at 11 under, retained her title as the low amateur in the competition for the second consecutive year. Notably, two-time champion Brooke Henderson from Smiths Falls, Ont., finished tied for 13th at 7 under.

Following her success, Huang expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to play in front of her home crowd and gain valuable experience at the Canadian Open. Both Huang and Deng’s top-10 finishes secured their entry into the upcoming LPGA’s FM Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass.

Despite strong performances from other players like Nelly Korda and Michelle Xing, it was Yamashita’s dominant play throughout the tournament that set her apart from the rest of the field. Henderson, on the other hand, faced challenges navigating the rough and missed crucial birdie opportunities.

Looking ahead, Henderson remains optimistic about her game and is eager to capitalize on her strong ball striking in future competitions. As the tournament concluded, it was evident that Yamashita’s exceptional performance at the CPKC Women’s Open had set a high standard for future events in the golfing calendar.

The next edition of the CPKC Women’s Open is scheduled to take place at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club in Gatineau, Que., in 2027.
