Halifax regional council member representing Bedford-Wentworth has received feedback from residents expressing worries about the handling of a recent incident involving an armed man in the locality. Jean St-Amand mentioned that the public and he were alerted almost simultaneously, indicating that social media posts predated the official alert. This caused some local residents to share information about the police presence even before the alert was issued.

On Saturday, an emergency alert was issued to residents of Bedford, N.S., advising them to secure their homes as law enforcement searched for the individual following a shooting in the Annapolis Valley. Subsequently, a broader alert was sent out 30 minutes later. The man was eventually apprehended.

The suspect, Ryan Alexander Cole, appeared briefly in Digby provincial court on Monday and is currently in custody until his next court date on August 25.

Councilor St-Amand expressed his intention to discuss the sequence of events leading up to the emergency alert on Saturday with the city’s chief administrative officer. He highlighted the importance of understanding the coordination between the alert system and on-site officers during such situations.

Authorities in the Annapolis Valley responded to a shooting incident involving a woman in South Farmington on Saturday. The suspect fled in a damaged Mazda sedan towards Halifax and subsequently abandoned the vehicle after a collision with a tree near Sunnyside Mall in Bedford.

Cpl. Mandy Edwards from the RCMP explained that alerts are strategically targeted based on various factors. Initially, a localized alert was issued as the suspect was believed to be on foot in the vicinity. Upon confirming that the individual was not located, a broader alert covering all residents in the Halifax Regional Municipality was released.

Edwards emphasized that alerts serve to inform and provide guidance to the public, although space constraints may limit detailed descriptions. In addition to alerts, law enforcement also utilizes social media and traditional news releases to disseminate information effectively.
