Motorists are being advised to complete a crucial task before Wednesday to prepare for the upcoming wintry conditions. Yellow weather warnings have been issued for Monday and Tuesday by the Met Office, covering extensive areas of Scotland and northern England. A new storm named Chandra has been named by the Met Office, bringing snow and rain across the UK. Storm Chandra is expected to bring plummeting temperatures and significant snowfall.
The rain and snow warnings are set to start at midnight on January 27 and remain in effect until 5 pm on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in some regions, with potential accumulations of up to 50mm. Areas above 500m could see up to 20cm of snow. Additionally, there are multiple flood warnings in place across England and Scotland, primarily focused on waterways in the Southwest of England.
The Met Office forecasts persistent rain and heavy showers associated with Storm Chandra, leading to potential flooding and disruption, especially in the higher ground areas. The agency warns of strong southeasterly winds exacerbating transport disruptions. With these conditions looming, experts recommend filling up with a full tank of fuel before embarking on long journeys to avoid being stranded in adverse weather conditions.
Filling up during cooler periods can also save money at the pump, as fuel pumps dispense slightly more fuel due to temperature fluctuations. Essential winter driving preparations include having a demisting pad, a torch, a hi-vis vest, a blanket, food and drink supplies, spare screenwash, de-icer, an ice scraper, a phone charger, a map, a first aid kit, warning triangles, jump leads, a spade, and a piece of carpet for potential snow-related emergencies.
