In a short timeframe, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have experienced the departure of two key aides: Meredith Maines, the chief communications officer, and James Holt, who previously led their organization, Archewell.
Holt, who served as the couple’s PR boss from 2019 to 2021, transitioned to focus more on supporting the Sussexes in their charitable endeavors after they stepped back from royal duties in 2020. Maines, on the other hand, resigned after working with Harry and Meghan for only 10 months, making her the eleventh publicist to leave the Sussexes in the past five years.
Following Holt’s resignation announcement, reports indicated that he desired to spend more time with his family in London. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside the Duke and Duchess, highlighting their joint efforts in various charitable projects over the years.
In his statement to the press, Holt mentioned, “Collaborating with Prince Harry and Meghan has been a significant honor in my professional journey. Their commitment to making a positive impact has continuously inspired me to aim higher in our endeavors, from supporting mental health initiatives in the military to aiding children in need.”
Shortly after Maines’ departure, she also released a statement, revealing her decision to pursue a new opportunity in 2026 after a fulfilling year of working with the Sussexes and Archewell. She expressed deep appreciation for the couple, their team, and the meaningful work they are engaged in globally.
Several other communication staff members have left in recent times, including Emily Robinson, who served as the director of communications for Harry and Meghan but resigned after three months. Additionally, the Sussexes’ global press secretary, Ashley Hansen, departed a year ago to establish her consultancy. Earlier departures included UK-based staff Charlie Gipson and California-based staff Kyle Boulia.
The high turnover rate of key staff within the Sussex camp has raised questions about the challenges of working with Harry and Meghan for an extended period. Past reports have suggested that the working environment may have been stressful and draining for some staff members, with rumors of former employees seeking therapy. The Sussexes have refuted any allegations of mistreatment.
Despite the speculations, the role of a public relations officer for Harry and Meghan is perceived as demanding due to the couple’s balancing act between privacy and public exposure.
Critics have pointed out Harry and Meghan’s fluctuating focus in recent years, involving ventures in Netflix productions, lifestyle brands, philanthropic activities, and connections with Hollywood personalities.
The couple’s public approval has not been consistently high, partly due to their public criticisms of the Royal Family and unconventional career decisions, which may contribute to the challenges of retaining a long-term PR chief.
As Harry and Meghan embark on the search for a new public relations representative, Liam Maguire, their UK and Europe communications director, is expected to take on a more prominent role in managing publicity-related matters.
