Scottish Teen Faces Drug Smuggling Charges in Qatar

Share

A teenager from Scotland is facing allegations of being involved in drug smuggling and had to spend Christmas in a prison in Qatar while his mother was deeply concerned back home. Lino Neil, an 18-year-old champion fisherman, recounted his experience of being in a cramped cell with 80 other men in Doha before being transferred to the city’s Central Prison. He claims he was forced to carry a suitcase filled with cannabis from Thailand to Dublin but was caught in Doha, where drug-related crimes are treated seriously.

The teenager’s family, residing near Stirling, shared how he called home in a state of panic upon realizing the potential lengthy detention in the Gulf nation. This incident coincides with a rise in the use of drug mules coming from Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Beki Wright, the head of the National Crime Agency’s Borders Threat Team, recently warned about criminal gangs luring young Brits with promises of extravagant vacations in exchange for transporting illicit substances. Lino’s mother, Nicola, expressed her belief that her son, a renowned angler, was manipulated into the situation by criminals, emphasizing his young age and lack of connections in Thailand.

The family is facing financial challenges with the legal expenses for Lino’s trial in Doha estimated at around £40,000. They have already managed to raise approximately £2500 to secure a solicitor for his first court appearance. Nicola revealed the toll her son’s ordeal has taken on her mental health, highlighting the need for his safe return home.

Lino is scheduled to appear in court on January 27, where he plans to defend himself by claiming that a British expatriate coerced him into transporting the cannabis. His brother, Robbie, shared details of the events leading to Lino’s arrest and expressed disbelief at the accusations, emphasizing Lino’s lack of knowledge in such criminal activities.

Robbie also mentioned the intervention of the British Embassy in Doha and the improvement in Lino’s conditions after being moved to a different prison within the city. The family is hopeful for a fair assessment of the situation by the Qatari authorities and is focused on bringing Lino back home safely.
