The Met Office has issued alerts for rain and snow in 27 regions as the UK prepares for Storm Chandra.
These two new weather notifications, spanning the entirety of Tuesday, encompass areas of Scotland, northern England, and the Midlands. The Met Office has cautioned that intense rainfall may transform into snow over elevated terrains, potentially leading to travel and power disruptions on Tuesday.
Storm Chandra, scheduled to impact the country tomorrow, derives its name from the western Europe storm naming consortium shared among the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Nine weather advisories are active for tomorrow at the time of this report. Residents in regions under rain alerts are advised to assess flood risks to their properties and prepare flood contingency plans along with emergency kits if necessary.
The initial warning, effective from midnight until 5pm tomorrow, covers sections of northern England, southern Scotland, and the Midlands. Anticipated widespread rainfall ranges from 20mm to 30mm, with localized areas expecting up to 50mm. The Met Office indicated, “Rain showers will progress northward from Monday night into Tuesday, turning into snow on elevated areas.”
The subsequent alert, in effect from 6am tomorrow until the day’s end, pertains to parts of central and eastern Scotland. Expected rainfall accumulations range from 20mm to 35mm across the region, with some locales potentially receiving up to 50mm. The Met Office forecasts, “Rain showers will develop extensively on Tuesday, intensifying at periods and transitioning into snow on elevated terrains.”
Both alerts predict snowfall on elevated regions, with altitudes surpassing 500m possibly experiencing up to 20cm of snow accumulation.
