A mother and her 15-year-old daughter have tragically passed away after reportedly consuming a tainted Christmas meal. Antonella Di Ielsi, 50, and Sara Di Vita, 15, are said to have ingested fish, mussels, and mushrooms during the festive dinner, leading to suspected acute liver failure. The duo began showing symptoms of food poisoning, such as nausea and abdominal pain, shortly after dining in Pietracatella, Italy.
Sara was taken to the emergency room twice before being discharged but her condition deteriorated, resulting in her demise at Cardarelli Hospital. Antonella was hospitalized soon after exhibiting similar symptoms. Despite medical intervention, both succumbed to the illness swiftly, leaving medical professionals puzzled by the rapid progression.
Vincenzo Cuzzone of Cardarelli Hospital mentioned that Sara presented with general symptoms upon arrival. However, the swift advancement of the disease prompted Antonella’s admission as a precaution. The family patriarch, Ganni Di Vita, 55, also displayed symptoms and was hospitalized in Rome’s Spallanzani Hospital for intensive care. Their 18-year-old daughter, who did not dine with them that evening, is under observation.
Authorities collected food samples from the household, including canned goods and fresh produce, to pinpoint the potential source of contamination. An official investigation has been launched, with post-mortem examinations ordered. The community, including the village mayor Antonio Tommasone, expressed deep grief over the tragic incident, leading to the cancellation of Christmas celebrations.
A vigil was held by locals at the hospital to mourn the loss, while festivities were called off. Five doctors from Cardarelli Hospital are under investigation for possible manslaughter. Prosecutor Nicola D’Angelo emphasized the need to probe negligence, determine the cause of poisoning, and prevent similar tragedies from affecting others.
