A significant winter storm is forecasted to bring up to 69 inches of snow to various parts of the UK, according to advanced weather modeling maps. The ECMWF weather model indicates a substantial blizzard moving across the UK on February 9, first affecting South Wales, southern England, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, the Pennines, and parts of Scotland.
Throughout the day, snow is expected to spread across most of the country. By 6 am, heavy snowfall is projected to cover most of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Cities such as London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, and Belfast are likely to experience snowy conditions.
The snowfall is anticipated to move northward, reaching the north of England and Scotland by midday. Cities like Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Dundee are expected to see snowfall as per the maps.
Snow depth forecasts reveal the extensive wintry weather impact, with up to 175cm (69 inches) of snow expected over Scottish hills. South Wales could see 20cm (eight inches), while northern England and southern regions could accumulate around 8cm (approximately three inches) of snow.
In Northern Ireland, up to 4cm (1.5 inches) of snow could settle. The maps suggest that around 90% of the country will be covered in snow by midday on February 9.
The Met Office also warns of potential snow in February, forecasting wintry conditions from February 9 to 23. The agency mentions a likelihood of wet conditions in central and southern areas, with drier conditions expected in the north and northwest of the UK. Cold air from the northeast could bring wintry hazards, especially in conjunction with precipitation from the southwest.
Additionally, there may be snowfall before the specified period, with the forecast from January 30 to February 8 suggesting heavy rain, mild conditions in the south and southwest, and potential wintry showers in the northeast. Snow could extend to lower areas if cold air interacts with precipitation from the southwest.
