Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh has set her sights on achieving five individual gold medals at the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in two years. Her preparation over the past year has been laser-focused on this ambitious goal. The Pan Pacific swimming championships, taking place this week in the same city where she aims to shine in 2028, will provide a crucial benchmark of her current standing.
Upon arriving for the championships, McIntosh, who is on the cusp of turning 20, expressed her excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Games. Reflecting on flying over the stadium, she shared how the experience gave her chills and fueled her aspirations for the future. McIntosh emphasized the significance of being in California, the state where the Olympics will be held, as a special and important moment for her.
Having already secured three gold medals at the Paris Olympics, McIntosh has swiftly risen to stardom in the world of swimming. She currently holds four individual long-course world records, including the 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, and 400m individual medley. Notably, she shattered the women’s 200m butterfly world record at the Canadian trials in Montreal earlier this year, marking a historic achievement.
Following her extraordinary performance at the trials, McIntosh faced a setback due to illness, prompting her withdrawal from the event. However, she has since recuperated and is fully prepared for the Pan Pacific championships. McIntosh, part of the 42-member Canadian team competing at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, California, views this competition as a crucial step in her journey, particularly under the mentorship of renowned coach Bob Bowman.
McIntosh’s event lineup at the Pan Pacs includes the 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, and 400m individual medley. Notably, she will be competing in the 200m freestyle on the international stage for the first time since the 2023 world championships. Despite uncertainties about her performance, McIntosh remains optimistic and open to the possibility of setting new records, emphasizing her excitement for the challenges ahead.
Both McIntosh and Coach Bowman have strategically aimed to peak at the Pan Pacs, with McIntosh poised to deliver another remarkable showing in the pool. Looking ahead, she envisions the competition as a significant milestone on her path to the Los Angeles Olympics, anticipating a swift and exhilarating meet filled with energy and excitement.
