Marie Burge, a dedicated advocate for various causes on Prince Edward Island, passed away at the age of 88 in Charlottetown. Throughout her life, she championed workers’ rights, land conservation, and other social justice issues, striving to create a more equitable community. In 1984, Burge played a key role in establishing the Cooper Institute, a non-profit organization focused on research, education, and community development.
Joe Byrne, a close friend and colleague who worked with Burge at the institute, highlighted her ability to inspire new perspectives and encourage others to challenge themselves. Prior to her involvement with the Cooper Institute, Burge was actively engaged in the community, having served with the Sisters of St. Martha and taught at Kinkora High School. She also spent time in the Dominican Republic as part of the Latin American Mission Program, where she and a friend intervened to save a young man from execution by hiding him in their home during a period of unrest.
Mary Murphy, another member of the Sisters of St. Martha, noted that Burge returned from her mission work with a renewed dedication to supporting marginalized groups and addressing social issues. Burge’s advocacy extended to causes such as fair wages, land protection, and water rights. She was a vocal proponent of a basic income guarantee for P.E.I., believing in the importance of inclusive systems that benefit everyone.
Over the years, Burge received several accolades for her tireless activism, including the Order of P.E.I. and various medals. She was also actively involved in organizations such as the Coalition for the Protection of P.E.I. Lands and the National Farmers Union. Recognized for her commitment to social justice, Burge was a founding member of the P.E.I. Working Group for a Livable Income.
Her humility and humor were also noted by friends and colleagues, who remembered her as always laughing and downplaying her contributions to the community’s progress. Despite her significant impact, Burge remained humble, emphasizing that the work belonged to everyone striving for positive change. The New Democratic Party of P.E.I. paid tribute to Burge, expressing deep sorrow over her passing and highlighting her enduring legacy of compassion and dedication to creating a better world for all.
