Dan Petrescu, a former Chelsea defender, is currently undergoing cancer treatment as confirmed by a statement from his friend. Gino Iorgulescu, the president of the Romanian Football League, disclosed that Petrescu is receiving chemotherapy.
This development follows Petrescu’s resignation as head coach at CFR Cluj four months ago. He had been serving as the club’s manager for the fourth time.
Recent reports from Romania suggest that Petrescu has experienced a significant weight loss of five stone. Images and videos from his home country show him walking in a park, looking frail and wearing dark sunglasses.
Speaking to local media, Iorgulescu expressed his concern, stating, “It is a difficult situation. I hope for Dan’s recovery and a successful treatment. Although I am not aware of the exact diagnosis, the situation appears severe.”
Iorgulescu further added, “He is currently undergoing chemotherapy. I have a personal history with him, both as a player and a coach at FC National. The news is unsettling, and I have not had contact with him since learning about his condition.”
Turning 58 recently, Petrescu spent over four years at Stamford Bridge, scoring 23 goals and providing 20 assists in 208 appearances for Chelsea. He was part of the team that secured a League Cup, two FA Cups, and a UEFA Super Cup before transferring to Bradford City in 2000.
Following his time at Chelsea, Petrescu also played for Southampton and later returned to Romania to join FC National, where he eventually retired in 2003 to pursue a managerial career.
Having managed various clubs worldwide, Petrescu was in his fourth stint at CFR Cluj before stepping down in August. His previous tenure at the club saw him lead them to four league titles and a Romanian Cup triumph.
It has been reported that Petrescu’s three daughters have returned from abroad to support him during his treatment.
