Caitlyn Moony shares her journey of relocating to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018 in search of a new home. Having worked as a freelance social researcher in South Africa, she felt limited by the lack of career opportunities and low pay. With her adventurous spirit and family ties in Vancouver, she envisioned Canada, known for its politeness and scenic beauty, as a promising destination.
Upon arriving in Vancouver, Caitlyn was captivated by the city’s stunning landscapes, from the majestic North Shore mountains to the serene rainfalls in Pacific Spirit Park. However, as time passed, she realized her initial infatuation with the city was fading. Struggling with job prospects and the absence of a supportive network, she found herself disillusioned and isolated in her basement apartment.
Feeling disconnected and disheartened by the challenges of integrating into Vancouver’s community, Caitlyn longed for the vibrant social interactions she had experienced in other places. Her sense of isolation was exacerbated by the onset of the pandemic, prompting her to seek solace in the bustling energy of London, where she felt reinvigorated by the bustling city life.
Despite her initial excitement about London, Caitlyn discovered a newfound appreciation for the tranquility and introspection she had found in Vancouver. Realizing that Vancouver had quietly shaped her into a more reflective and grounded individual, she yearned to reconcile with the city that had challenged her to grow. Embracing the city’s imperfections and unique charm, Caitlyn returned to Vancouver, eager to explore the possibility of reconnecting with the place that had become an unexpected catalyst for personal growth.
In a heartfelt reflection, Caitlyn acknowledges Vancouver’s flaws but expresses a desire to rediscover her place in the city’s embrace. Packed with a renewed sense of understanding and acceptance, she lands once again in Vancouver, ready to embark on a new chapter of her journey.
