The union representing WestJet’s cabin crew has disclosed the specifics of the tentative agreement made with the Calgary-based airline following a one-day strike this week. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has outlined the terms of the deal, which includes an increase of over 18% in wages spread over three years. Additionally, a new “duty period premium” has been introduced to provide compensation for ground duties.
The agreement also encompasses enhancements in time off allowances, as well as elevated provisions for food and uniform expenses, among other benefits. WestJet flights throughout a significant part of Canada were halted during the extended holiday weekend, leading up to a potential strike by 4,400 flight attendants who initiated the strike early on a Sunday.
A tentative resolution was reached between the airline and the union in the early hours of Monday, resulting in a gradual return to normal operations for WestJet. Cabin crew members are scheduled to vote on the proposed deal in the forthcoming weeks.
