Legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, after more than sixty years away from Canada, has now become a U.S. citizen. Mitchell, 82 years old, shared the news through Instagram and X, posting a photo and video from her naturalization ceremony. The image captured Mitchell smiling, donning a red beret and sunglasses, holding a small American flag on her cardigan, while the video showed her being applauded as she moved forward during the ceremony. Her caption was succinct, stating, “A journey that began 62 years ago.”

Born as Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alta., in 1943, Mitchell relocated to the U.S. in the mid-1960s during a short-lived marriage to American musician Chuck Mitchell. She resided in Detroit and New York before settling in California, where she became a prominent figure in the Laurel Canyon music scene. Although she now lives in Santa Barbara, Calif., she also has a second home on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.

Mitchell is renowned for songs such as “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock,” as well as her influential 1971 album “Blue.” Her musical career has transitioned from folk singer in Toronto coffeehouses to one of the most significant songwriters in history. With 19 studio albums, Mitchell has earned 11 Grammys, five Juno Awards, and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Her decision to acquire U.S. citizenship has elicited mixed reactions on social media. While some celebrated the news, others questioned its timing, especially considering Mitchell’s previous criticisms of U.S. President Donald Trump. Mitchell’s transition to American citizenship does not signify a departure from her Canadian roots, as both countries allow for dual citizenship, enabling her to retain her Canadian passport.

As Mitchell officially becomes an American citizen, there are speculations that her life story might soon hit the big screen. Reports suggest a biopic is in progress with director Cameron Crowe and actress Meryl Streep linked to the project.
